What is it?

Georgia’s All-State Chorus consists of the finest singers in the state. Singers from seventh grade through high school are eligible to audition. It is a great honor to be chosen for the Georgia All State Chorus and indicates a talent and dedication to vocal music which surpasses the average school chorus member.

Where and when is it?

The All State Chorus meets annually in Savannah. This coming year the event will be February 23-25, 2012. During those dates, the students rehearse Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning with a thrilling performance Saturday afternoon.

What is the cost?

Initially, the cost is $30 which covers the cost of music and rehearsal CD.  This money is due September 9, 2011. If a student successfully auditions, there is an acceptance fee of $25 due November 13,  music cost of approximately fifteen dollars, cost for black blouse or black dress for the ladies, lodging in Savannah and of course, meals.

What must I do to audition?

The GMEA choral assessment has recently been revamped. The audition now has four parts which is designed to fairly assess what students know as well as their voice quality. The process includes; memorization of a vocal solo specified by GMEA, scales including major, minor, and chromatic, a written theory assessment, and an auditory assessment. Assistance for this will be provided on Wednesday mornings from 7:45-8:45 in the chorus room. Additional time will be scheduled as the audition time draws near.

When is it and how will I get to the auditions and to Savannah?

The district level audition is Saturday, October 15 near Atlanta. Students will receive the exact audition time approximately two weeks prior to the audition. If a foreseen time conflict exists, please indicate this as early as possible to facilitate scheduling. Make ups for the October 15 date are for weather, illness (excused with a doctor’s note) or death in the family.  Students are responsible for their own transportation.

The state level audition will be held on the evening of Friday, January 20. The site will be at North Springs High School. Students are responsible for their own transportation.

Transportation to Savannah, lodging, and chaperoning will be the responsibility of the parent. Typically, parents share this responsibility among the final group of students.

We are hoping to reserve rooms at a hotel close to the Civic Center to facilitate transportation to rehearsals.

There is so much talent in the NMS Chorus that many of the students are eligible to audition. Although competitive, if students work diligently at sight reading, scales, and auditory recognition, they should be well prepared for the audition. Rehearsals in the morning will help with specific skills. Those students who study privately are also encouraged to enlist the help of their private teacher.
